Excel Horizontal Baler Models: EX and HV Series Specs, Comparison, and Who Each One Is For.

Excel Baler manufactures two distinct horizontal baler lineups - the EX Series of closed-end single-ram balers and the heavy-duty HV Series built specifically for non-ferrous metals. Seven models in total, each engineered for a specific application. HMS is an authorized Excel dealer and this post breaks down every model with full specs drawn directly from Excel manufacturer documentation.

Whether you are spec-ing a new horizontal baler for standard recyclables, looking for a dedicated foam baler, or need a machine capable of handling aluminum, copper, and radiators - this is the comparison you need before you buy.

Excel EX Series horizontal baler processing multiple recyclable materials including OCC cardboard paper and plastics
The Excel EX Series horizontal balers handle a wide range of recyclable materials - OCC, paper, plastics, cans, textiles, and more. Five models cover operations from light-duty recyclers and warehouses through heavy-duty industrial applications.

Two Series, Seven Models - How They Are Organized

Excel's horizontal baler lineup divides cleanly into two product families with different design philosophies and target applications.

The EX Series (EX62, EX63, EX63F, EX66, EX77) are closed-end single-ram horizontal balers. They share a common 20HP motor platform and produce mill-sized bales across standard recyclable material streams - OCC, paper, plastics, cans, and textiles. Within the EX Series, models step up in capability: the EX62 and EX63 are the standard models, the EX63F is purpose-built for foam, and the EX66 and EX77 are heavier-duty machines with more compaction force for demanding applications.

The HV Series (HV9, HV10) is a different machine entirely. Built with two-ram construction in a single-ram body, the HV Series is purpose-built for non-ferrous metals - aluminum siding, radiators, copper wire, aluminum extrusions, and miscellaneous scrap that would damage or underperform in a standard EX baler. If your primary material stream includes non-ferrous metals, the HV Series is the right starting point.

The EX Series and HV Series are not interchangeable. If you are baling standard recyclables, the EX Series is your machine. If non-ferrous metals are a significant part of your stream, start with the HV Series. Buying the wrong series for your material costs you in bale quality, wear, and machine longevity.

EX Series

Closed-end single-ram horizontal balers for standard recyclables - five models

The EX Series shares a common design foundation across all five models: full platen penetration, a closed-end bale chamber that produces consistent mill-sized bales without preconditioning, six guided wire tie slots, PLC-controlled operation, and Excel's 1-2-3 warranty. Where they differ is in machine width, cycle time, cylinder configuration, and specialty application focus.

Excel 1-2-3 Warranty — EX Series

Every new Excel EX Series baler carries one of the strongest warranties in the industry: 1 year labor, 2 years parts, 3 years structure (U.S.A. only). This is not a standard one-year warranty - the 3-year structural coverage is a meaningful differentiator for a machine you expect to run for decades.

The EX63 adds two significant features over the EX62: a hydraulic door latch and a regenerative circuit that reduces cycle time by 17 seconds - from 46/30 to 29/21 seconds. Same footprint, same 159,400 lb platen force, meaningfully faster throughput. OCC: 1,200 lbs, 1.8 TPH. Newspaper: 1,500 lbs. For most standard recycling and warehouse applications, the EX63 is the right choice - the cycle time improvement is worth the modest cost difference over the EX62.

The EX63F is built for foam. The "F" designation tells you what it is for. Foam is bulky and resists compression in standard-length chambers - the EX63F addresses this with a 283-inch overall length (nearly 8 feet longer than the EX62/63) and a wider 70-inch feed opening that accommodates the volume of foam material without jamming. Longer cylinder stroke (124 inches versus 74 inches) provides deeper chamber penetration for effective foam compression. The EX63F also handles the full standard recyclable stream - OCC, paper, plastics, and cans - but is not suited for non-ferrous metals. Right for e-commerce operations, packaging manufacturers, appliance distributors, and any facility processing significant foam volume alongside standard recyclables.

The EX66 moves to a wider 84-inch body (versus 79 inches on the EX62/63) and heavier overall construction at 20,000 lbs. It shares the 29/21 second cycle time of the EX63 but in a more substantial machine built for higher-throughput and more demanding applications. OCC: 1,200 lbs. Magazine: 2,000 lbs. Tin cans: 1,200 lbs. The wider chamber and heavier duty frame make it well suited for operations running higher volumes or more varied material streams where the lighter EX62/63 would show wear more quickly over time.

The EX77 is the most capable machine in the EX Series. Larger 6.5-inch cylinders (versus 6-inch on all other EX models) push overall platen force to 187,153 lbs - nearly 28,000 lbs more than the EX62/63/66. That additional force widens the material range significantly: the EX77 is the only EX Series model that handles non-ferrous metals including aluminum extrusions (900 lbs), painted aluminum siding (1,300 lbs), radiators (1,300 lbs), insulated copper wire (3,300 lbs), and miscellaneous non-ferrous scrap (1,200 lbs). OCC bale weight increases to 1,300 lbs. If your material stream includes light non-ferrous metals alongside standard recyclables and you want to stay within the EX Series, the EX77 is the answer.

HV Series

Two-ram construction in a single-ram body - purpose-built for non-ferrous metals

The HV Series is a fundamentally different machine from the EX Series. Excel describes it as "two-ram construction in a single-ram baler" - the floor and side sheets use the same single-sheet interlocking construction found in Excel's full two-ram machines, giving the HV the structural durability to handle what the EX Series cannot.

Non-ferrous metals - aluminum siding, radiators, copper wire, aluminum extrusions - are dense, abrasive, and hard on equipment. A standard EX Series baler running non-ferrous metal will wear faster, produce lower-quality bales, and may not generate enough compaction force for the dense bale weights that make non-ferrous loads economical to haul and sell. The HV Series is built for exactly this application.

The HV9 runs on a 50 HP motor with a 9-inch main cylinder bore and delivers 190,851 lbs of platen force - comparable to the Excel 2R9D two-ram baler in terms of compaction force. Cycle time of 15/11 seconds is fast for the material weights involved. Key non-ferrous bale weights: aluminum extrusion 1,000 lbs, painted aluminum siding 1,700 lbs, radiators 1,500 lbs, insulated copper wire 3,300 lbs. OCC throughput is 1.8 TPH. The 55-inch wide by 45-inch long feed opening and 300-gallon hydraulic reservoir are sized for sustained operation on heavy materials. Right for recyclers and scrap yards processing moderate volumes of non-ferrous metals alongside standard recyclables.

The HV10 steps up the HV9 with a 10-inch main cylinder bore, increasing platen force to 235,619 lbs maximum. The defining feature unique to the HV10 is Excel's patented hydraulic bale pusher bar - a mechanism that extends to push completed dense metal bales beyond the vertical door for tying and ejection of the next bale. On heavy non-ferrous loads, bale weight and density make manual ejection handling impractical; the hydraulic pusher bar solves this. Key bale weights: aluminum extrusion 1,200 lbs, painted aluminum siding 2,000 lbs, radiators 1,700 lbs, insulated copper wire 3,500 lbs. If non-ferrous metals are your primary or significant secondary material stream, the HV10 is the machine to spec.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Excel EX Series (EX62, EX63, EX63F, EX66, EX77) are closed-end single-ram horizontal balers designed for standard recyclable material streams including OCC, paper, plastics, and cans. The HV Series (HV9, HV10) uses two-ram construction in a single-ram body and is purpose-built for non-ferrous metals including aluminum siding, radiators, copper wire, and aluminum extrusions. These are not interchangeable - matching the right series to your material stream is the most important decision before buying.

The Excel EX63F is purpose-built for foam recycling. Its extended 283-inch length and wider 70-inch feed opening accommodate the bulky nature of foam material. It also handles the full standard recyclable stream including OCC, paper, plastics, and cans - but is not suited for non-ferrous metals. Right for e-commerce operations, appliance distributors, and packaging manufacturers processing significant foam volume.

The Excel EX Series carries Excel's 1-2-3 warranty: one year labor, two years parts, and three years structure coverage (U.S.A. only). This is significantly stronger than standard one-year warranties. The HV Series carries a one-year limited warranty on parts and labor. Both apply to new machines purchased through authorized dealers like HMS.

The HV Series uses two-ram construction in a single-ram baler body. The floor and side sheets use the same single-sheet interlocking construction found in Excel's two-ram machines, giving the HV Series the structural durability needed for non-ferrous metal baling. The HV10 includes a patented hydraulic bale pusher bar that extends to push dense metal bales beyond the vertical door for tying and ejection of the next bale.

Bottom Line

Seven models, two series - match the machine to your material

The Excel horizontal baler lineup covers more application ground than almost any competitor. Standard recyclables? The EX62 through EX77 gives you five options scaled by throughput, cycle speed, and force. Foam? The EX63F was designed for it. Non-ferrous metals? The HV9 and HV10 were built for exactly that and nothing else handles it as well.
